      This classic Italian restaurant offers authentic, no-frills Italian classics. A variety of pasta sauces are served with your choice of pasta. The signature dish is the Italian meatballs – four plump, tender beef meatballs smothered in a rich tomato sauce. It’s an incredibly comforting dish. If available, try the vongole sauce, made from clams and traditionally served with spaghetti.

      Chicken main courses are all offered with the option of substituting for veal. The melenzane and the pizza are cooked in an authentic wood-fired pizza oven, giving the dough a perfectly crisp, burnished base. For a pizza with a difference, try the strega pizza topped with chicken livers cooked in a wine sauce. Portion sizes are substantial, so easily shareable amongst a table friends.

      They have a small selection of Italian dessert favourites such as tiramisu and cassata, with a South African peppermint crisp tart thrown in for good measure.

      Drinks
      The wine list is presented casually on a chalkboard and consists of a small selection of local wines. Also available is a large selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. They also serve imported Italian bottled water.

      Service is relaxed and casual and the food is prepared in a timely manner – perfect for a quick lunchtime stop.

      Ambience
      The walls are painted in large murals of angels and prophets, giving the space a bright colourfulness. On a warm summer’s day, sitting outside on the patio is perfect for soaking up the warm sun. In winter, the wood oven keeps the restaurant warm and cosy.

      And…
      Posticino has gone mobile, with a wood-fired pizza oven available for hire at events.

        Posticino is a staple on the Cape Town pizza and pasta scene and a favourite with locals and tourists alike. There’s a plethora of pizza places, but somehow the homely, vibey feel of this central address on the Sea Point strip remains a favourite. The charm lies in simplicity and choice. The very-very-thin-crust wood-fired pizzas will keep the diet voices in your head at bay, because perception is everything. If you don’t like some of the toppings, switch it out, but there really is no need. Mix it up with a selection of pizzas and pastas and create your own signature sauce of the night. The fluffy cannelloni is a favourite and any pizza will be a crowd pleaser. They had me at caviar and Boccocini.

        If you have space left, round it off with a pizzatella lathered with nutella and chocolate sauce. And if you add an old school Don Pedro, your gastronomic trip to Italy will be complete.

        Drink
        It’s a mission to pair pizza and pasta with a great wine that will add to the eating experience (it’s different if you opted for the veal or chicken), so keep it simple with a beer or light wine. The wines are showcased on the chalk board and quite pricey for a pizza/pasta night.

        Service
        The service is commensurate – this is an establishment with a track record of all-round boisterous eating, where it’s all about comfort food and fun conversations. The service is efficient, friendly, tried-and-trusted and very much under the watchful eyes of the familia in charge. They two dons know how to keep their daily families happy. Book, because it’s always full.

        Ambience
        Vibey, homely, boisterous… Like Christmas with the entire family. And that noisy uncle.

        And...
        It will convert any non-pizza/pasta eater to give the Italians a try.

      • Will never eat here again. Firstly they got my order wrong, asked for pasta but got a pizza, the only thing going for it was the thin crust. My partner ordered the spinach ravioli and the sauce tasted as if it came from a tin. The ravioli also tasted shop bought. Rather try the many other restaurants in the area before going near this place.
